Conducted in partnership with Environmental Resources Management (ERM), the Professional Support for Fieldwork project directly addresses issues surrounding geography fieldwork provision in schools.
In particular, the project aims to:
(1) Provide resources and guidelines that highlight how the skills and knowledge developed through school fieldwork are directly relevant to ‘real-world’ professional industries, career paths, and activities.
(2) Provide fieldwork ideas and guidelines with an emphasis on site types/activities that can be found/performed within proximity to most schools and at a low cost.
This collection of resources, created in collaboration with Tornillo Scientific, includes:
Lesson 1
Guidelines for two possible river fieldwork projects.
These activities are demonstrated using an example study area (Tame River Valley, Greater Manchester). For each approach, a power point presentation is provided for use in the classroom.
Lesson 2
Guidelines for three possible coastal fieldwork projects. These activities are demonstrated using an example study area (Point of Ayr & Prestatyn, North Wales). For each approach, a power point presentation is provided for use in the classroom.
For each fieldwork plan, we provide generic requirements for fieldwork site selection, the tools and techniques for data collection, pre- and post-fieldwork activities, relevance to GCSE and A Level curricula, critical Health & Safety considerations, and an example case study.
