Annual International Conference

The RGS-IBG Annual International Conference regularly attracts over 2,000 geographers from around the world.

The RGS-IBG Annual International Conference 2024 will be chaired by Professor Stephen Legg (University of Nottingham, UK).

The chair’s theme will explore mapping in all its forms, in a world that is saturated with maps, from historical cartography to the newest technologies and digital practices.

Maps trace invasions, financial crises, pandemics and environmental disasters, and our responses to them. They plot and coordinate surveillance, and counter-plot evasion and resistance. They chart jet streams, oceanic oscillations and ozone holes, heatwaves, droughts, and drizzles. Maps map territory and sovereignty, but also evidence indigenous land claims and historical landscapes of meaning.

A unique opportunity for global geographic encounters

The Geographical Society of Ireland (GSI), Royal Geographical Society with IBG (RGS-IBG), and International Geographical Union (IGU) are delighted that the global geographic community in August 2024 will have the opportunity to meet, share ideas and engage with each other in an extended conference season.

The International Geographical Congress 2024 (IGC) will be hosted by the GSI in Dublin, Ireland beginning with an opening ceremony on Saturday 24 August with paper sessions concluding at lunchtime on Thursday 29 August and a closing ceremony in the early afternoon. There may be some post-congress fieldtrips on 30 August.

The annual RGS-IBG conference will take place in London from Wednesday 28-Friday 30 August with the usual range of exciting keynote sessions, journal events, papers and other sessions.

This provides a unique opportunity for those travelling to the conferences to attend both consecutively. Through our scheduling, we will be working closely together to ensure that those who wish to participate and present in both conferences will be facilitated to do so.

As both the GSI and RGS-IBG are constituent members of the International Geographical Union,  we are planning a joint hybrid event on Wednesday 28 August to bring those in attendance at the two conferences virtually together, the first time ever that it will be possible to do this. This is an exciting opportunity for our discipline and we look forward to seeing you in Dublin, London or online to participate in this truly unique experience!
