Early in your career, membership of a professional body can offer several benefits.

 

Professional recognition

Being a student or early-career member of a professional body not only adds to your CV, it demonstrates you are serious about your professionalism. It can also demonstrate early commitment to a specific career area, particularly if you get involved in their activities.

 

Support and advice

You will be able to access guidance and specialist support on your career. This may be through publications, best practice guides, sector or subject updates and more. Some professional bodies also offering mentoring or coaching for early-career members. All of these will contribute to your wider professional awareness and offer opportunities for you to get involved.

Continuing Professional Development

CPD is vital to success in any career. Professional bodies often run training courses, webinars, mentoring schemes and offer accreditation that will be targeted to your needs.

If you are working towards a professional accreditation, such as Chartered Geographer, you may have the opportunity to receive feedback on your CPD It is normally a requirement of maintaining a Chartered Status that you complete sufficient relevant CPD each year. This signals to your employer and clients that you are maintaining your expertise in a way that is recognised by your profession.
