Jonathan is an author, expedition leader, and overland equipment and vehicle expert. He has written for nearly two dozen magazines, was a correspondent for Outside Magazine for five years, and has authored over dozen books, some with his wife, Roseann. Jonathan’s writing topics have ranged from African travel to natural history to outdoor equipment to guns to sailing. In spring 2007, he co-founded Overland Journal and was its executive editor until 2011. Jonathan has won several awards: the Arizona Press Club Award for natural history feature writing, the National Outdoor Book Award, and the National Park Service award for interpretive excellence. His book Outside Adventure Travel: Sea Kayaking was a finalist for the 7th Annual Banff Mountain Book Festival Adventure Travel Writing Award. His children’s book, Victor, the Reluctant Vulture, won the Southwest Book of the Year Award in the Children’s Category and he recently published his first novel, Trail of the Jaguar. His extensive travel experience encompasses explorations on six continents and he is an elected Fellow of the Explorers Club and the Royal Geographical Society. He regularly teaches classes on overland driving, natural history, and writing, and his popular blog, Overland Tech and Travel, is ranked number two of the top 60 overlanding sites by Feedspot. In 2024 he will debut Exploration Quarterly, a new magazine in collaboration with his wife Roseann.
