Society policies and statements
Public statements from the Society
The Society is dedicated to the advancement of geographical science and its application to the challenges facing the world’s people, places and environments. We are a charity registered with the UK’s Charity Commission, a learned society, a professional body and a membership organisation.
Given the constraints of our Charter, the requirements of the Charity Commission and our policy on advocacy and lobbying, the Society is limited to making public statements on or about geography.
Society policies
The Society has a series of policies that guide our work.
Academic freedom
Academic freedom is central to the Society's mission of advancing geographical science.
The value of fieldwork in schools and higher education
Fieldwork is an integral part of the discipline of geography and provides unrivalled opportunities for students in schools and universities.
Working conditions
Many geographers in HEIs across the UK are affected by ongoing disputes based around their working conditions and pension provisions.
Closure of geography departments
We are concerned at reports that several university geography departments are under threat of closure.
Conduct of Fellows and Members
Our code of conduct sets out the principles of behaviour that govern all Fellows and Members.
Harassment
Sexual harassment, abuse of position and coercive behaviours have no place in the academic community.
Advocacy
Our advocacy policy applies to anyone acting on our behalf.
Responsible Investment
We maintain regular scrutiny of environmental, social and corporate governance performance in our investments.
